We just concluded our first EGRET-AAA workshop on 31 October – 3 November 2023 in Groningen, Netherlands. These workshops serve as an opportunity for DCs and PIs to see each other, discuss their research and learn a wide variety of soft skills such as presentation skills, grant writing, project management, etc. As this was our first workshop, the excitement to finally meet each other was high. You can read more about what we did during this workshop below. Or you can watch our recap movie here.

The DCs met in person for the first time and got introduced to EGRET-AAA and advanced glaucoma by prof. Nomdo Jansonius. After that, we had the opportunity to visit the ophthalmology clinic of the UMCG and learn to work with OCT, tonometry, and perimetry devices.

Every DC introduced themselves and the goal of their project to the consortium via an oral presentation. At the end of the day, we went to visit the Royal Dutch Visio, the center of expertise for blind and partially sighted people in The Netherlands.

On Thursday, our scientific symposium took place. Prof. Michael Hoffmann gave a talk on retinal function and dysfunction in glaucoma and Dr. Enyam Morny gave a talk on the challenges of handling glaucoma in Ghana. Everyone then discussed gender issues in science and the DCs finished off with a presentation skills workshop.

To end our first workshop, we had more talks on sustainable research management by Ashkan Nejad and on optic nerve regeneration by prof. Sonja Mersch. A special moment at the workshop was our conversation with Anne Henke, who shared her experiences of having advanced glaucoma so everyone can see through the eyes of what a person with glaucoma goes through.
